Autosampler accessory up and running
A BACs-60 autosampler accessory is now installed and operational on the Bruker 500MHz instrument in the Department of Biochemistry. The accessory can handle up to 60 samples in a variety of NMR tubes (3mm or 5mm, Wilmad or Shigemi). Combined with the TOPSPIN software, the accessory can automate sample insertion, field frequency locking, data collection and processing, and sample retrieval for completely hands-free operation. Further, TOPSPIN allows for remote accessory management and experiment setup. This new tool was purchased with a Royal Society Research Grant to Dr. John Vakonakis and is available for all users of the facility.

Highest field NMR spectrometer in the world
A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, operating at a 1H frequency of 950MHz is now fully operational in the Department of Biochemistry. The spectrometer has been built by Nick Soffe in the Biochemistry Department, around a magnet with a field strength of 22.3 Tesla, currently the highest in the world for high resolution NMR studies. The system was purchased with a grant of £3.1M from the Wellcome Trust to Professor Iain Campbell. It will be used by Oxford scientists and others to study protein structure as well as interactions between proteins and other molecules. This new magnet continues a long tradition of collaboration between Oxford University and Oxford Instruments, started by Sir Rex Richards and Sir Martin Wood over 40 years ago, to provide the University with the latest magnet technology for research.
