Conclusion

The potential of single molecule technologies for exploring the behaviour of biomolecular systems is enormous. Our aim has been to give a flavour of what can be achieved; every week new experiments and new methods are described in the literature. With a fairly simple, custom-built apparatus, much can be achieved. We hope we have given the reader some ideas on how to begin exploring this new frontier in biology.
